Description: |
In 1949, the Hollywood Blacklist was in full force, putting many writers, actors and directors out of work. In 1971, Richard Nixon compiled his own “enemies list,” which was a Blacklist in disguise. My newest play, “Epitaph,” explores these two events in a provocative new way.
Samuel Dysart, famed writer and director is blacklisted for his pro-union views, and betrayed by his closest friends. For years, he tries to make an updated version of “Don Quixote,” which would take place during the Spanish Civil War (a war he witnessed first hand). Like Quixote, Sam suffers from dementia in later years, which clouds his memories and twists his reasoning.
The play switches back and forth in time between 1949 (when Sam is forced to confront the House Un-American Activities Committee and Richard Nixon himself) and 1974 (the day Nixon resigned).
